The Process of Communication

Lesson 1: The Process of Communication

Fig. 1.1 How does communication work as a process

The process of communication, this is always encountered in our everyday living. From the time your mom wakes you up in the morning, until your mom instructs you to sleep uses the process of communication. The way you talk to your friends, the way that your teacher discusses your lessons in class uses the process of communication.

Why is communication important? Just imagine the world without communication. Do you think that one would understand the other? Do you think that one can convey their ideas to other person? Now, can you imagine the real essence of communication?

This book provides us the needed knowledge, skills and information to be communicative competent. By the end of the English 101 course, you are expected to be communicative competent in speaking the international language, the business language and the secondary language of the Philippines.

How does Communication Work as a Process?

Based on the diagram shown in the previous page, we can now clearly define how communication works as a process (refer to Figure 1.1). The information to be transmitted comes from the speaker who is also referred as the source of information. He is able to transfer the information by using his voice. The voice serves as the transmitter of information in which it travels to a medium. The medium in which these sound waves travel is the air. Air serves as the channel of communication in which the voice is travelling through. After which the voice is transmitted through the air, the information is now transferred to the listeners, the receiver of the information.

On the process of communication, what are the two important elements of it? They are the speaker and the listener.

Effective Communication

How can we determine that communication between the speaker and the listener is effective? The answer is the responses. Responses from the listener such as nodding, smiling and asking questions are some of the indicators that communication is effective.

Points for Effective Communication

Here are some points to remember that may be useful in speaking.

  • Be calm. Always be calm and don’t let nervousness turn you down. Always think that you are good speaker. Don’t be afraid to commit mistakes. Always remember that mistakes are a part of learning. If you commit a mistake, just continue and don’t let them know that you commit mistake.
  • Stand Straight. Develop good posture while standing. This may help you get the attention of your audience. You may also move from one place to another if you will but don’t do that frequently.
  • Develop good speaking voice. One factor that may affect your performance as a speaker is your speaking voice. Develop a speaking voice that will catch the attention of the audience, not too loud and not too soft. Also practice to get the air not just from your vocal chords but also from the diaphragm. Develop good tone of voice, with rising and falling intonations, not just plain voice.
  • Establish eye-to-eye contact with your listeners/audience. Establishing eye-to-eye contact with your listeners will help you catch their attention. Also, encourage your listeners to participate what you are talking. Ask them some questions and let them participate in your activities.
  • Be Creative. Just do talks that will not bore your audience. You may also encourage them to take down notes and you will give questions at the end of the lecture. Use your creative skills.
